Recycle Your Cell Phone. Help Fund Schools

August 21, 2008

People can now recycle their cell phones and other wireless devices, and know that the money generated will go to benefit schools.

Qwest Communications is launching Go Green for Schools, a program that provides free recycling envelopes that can be filled with old wireless devices and mailed off for recycling. The envelopes are available in Qwest stores in 14 states, or on the Web here. All wireless devices from any company are eligible, not just Qwest products.

Qwest has pledged to spend the money generated to benefit schools in its territory. Money will go toward technology, educator training and early childhood education.

As little as 20% of all cell phones discarded are recycled. Because electronics contain small amounts of toxic metals and plastics, the accumulation of those materials in landfills, or the burning of them in waste incinerators, can generate significant pollution.
